SURIGAO CITY – There were fewer cases of sexually transmitted infections here in 2010 compared with the previous year, records from the City Health Office showed.
Cases of gonorrhea, bacterial vaginosis, and other transmitted diseases went down in 2010.
The City Health Office attributed this to its relentless campaign to stem the spread of venerealdisease among commercial sex workers in the city.
Jessica Nepomuceno, social hygiene clinic nurse at CHO, said cases of gonorrhea dropped to 33 in 2010, from 81 cases in 2009. Cases attributed to bisexual men and non gay-identified (NGI) men who engaged in sexual activity with other men also went down, from 101 cases in 2009 to 81 last year.
For bacterial vaginosis, there were 260 cases in 2010 from 387 in 2009. Nepomuceno said two cases only are slightly up and these are Trichomoniasis and Genital Warts.
Trichomoniasis infected six people in 2009 and seven in 2010. No case of genital warts infection was recorded in 2009. There were two cases in 2010.
Nepomuceno said the CHO recorded a total of 180 persons infected with sexually transmitted diseases last year.
Nepomuceno added that the use of condoms may prevent transmission of the disease but it does not fully guarantee. She said the best defense against STIs is to remain faithful to one’s partner.
