Study: 1 in 14 People Has Oral HPV Infection

Human papilloma virus as seen through a colored transmission electron micrograph.
So how many people have human papillomavirus in their mouths?
Quite a few, say researchers who got more than 5,000 volunteers across the country to spit into a cup and answer detailed questions about their sex lives.
The bottom line: 6.9 percent of people in the U.S. (ages 14 to 69) have oral infections with HPV. some types of HPV are linked to cancer and genital warts.
About 3.7 percent of people have “high-risk” oral infections from types of HPV that are most likely to lead to cancer. about 3.1 percent have “low-risk” infections.
The results were just published online by JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association. an accompanying editorial says “these results are remarkable….”
How come?
A dramatic increase in cancers of the head and neck has been linked, in part, to HPV, which is also a cause of many cervical cancers. now we have some real numbers about the extent of infection in the U.S. to go on.
For instance, a virus type dubbed HPV-16 was found to affect about 1 percent of people. That’s the one that’s been detected in about 85 percent of oral cancers.
There were some other noteworthy findings. Men are much more likely to have an oral HPV infection than women (10.1 percent vs. 3.6 percent). And people who have had more sex partners and more frequent sex are more likely to be positive for HPV.
Merck and GlaxoSmithKline make vaccines against HPV. The vaccine is recommended for girls and, recently, boys to guard against cancers of the cervix and anus, as well genital warts.
But the vaccines aren’t approved to prevent oral cancers. And the researchers note that the vaccines’ effectiveness against oral HPV infections is “unknown, and therefore vaccination cannot currently be recommended” to prevent oral cancers.
Ohio State’s Dr. Maura Gillison, lead author of the paper, has served as a consultant to both Merck and Glaxo. Merck was one of the funders the study.

Ask Dr. K: Vaccinating boys against HPV makes good sense
Dear Dr. K: I know it is recommended that young girls get vaccinated against HPV, since this virus can cause cervical cancer. What about boys? At one time I read it was not recommended for them, but recently I heard that this had changed. has it changed, and why?
Dear Reader: You’re right. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recently recommended that boys also get the HPV vaccine.
HPV (human papillomavirus) causes genital warts. In women, some strains of the virus cause cancer of the cervix. The cervix is a part of a woman’s uterus, the opening into the uterus from the vagina. Vaccines for HPV have been shown to reduce a woman’s later risk of getting cervical cancer. The discovery that HPV causes cervical cancer was a landmark discovery that was honored with the Nobel Prize.
So it’s clear why the HPV vaccine is recommended for girls. but why is it recommended for boys? HPV can also cause cancers of the anus, penis, vagina, mouth and throat. This makes it a problem for both men and women. In fact, in the U.S., 7,000 men each year get cancers caused by HPV.
when it was first approved in 2006, the first vaccine against HPV — Gardasil — was for use only in girls and young women. Although it also was approved for boys in 2009, at that time it wasn’t recommended that all boys also be vaccinated. but the recent ACIP recommendations are a stronger push. They actively recommend that boys should be vaccinated at 11 or 12. Why?
obviously, males can’t get cervical cancer. but if they are infected with the virus, they can spread it to women through sexual activity. So vaccinating boys and young men against the virus will help prevent its transmission to women. It will also help prevent some of the 7,000 HPV-related cancers that occur in men each year.
The CDC hopes that the recommendation will help make up for the fact that fewer girls than it had hoped have been vaccinated. So far, only about one-third of girls eligible for vaccination against HPV have gotten all three necessary shots.
The more people who are vaccinated against a virus, the less that virus can circulate in the community. Vaccinating boys, too, helps our health as a group. This is sometimes called “herd immunity.”
some parents take issue with the idea of vaccinating young children against a disease that is transmitted sexually. This may be part of the reason not as many girls as expected have been vaccinated. making the HPV vaccine part of routine vaccines for all children may help remove some of the stigma. Vaccinating kids before they might become sexually active makes sense.

HPV May Raise Women’s Risk of Contracting Heart Disease
New research shows that women who tested positive for HPV DNA were 2.3 times as likely as those without the virus to have heart disease
![]()
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. new research suggests it may also raise women’s risk of contracting heart disease.
Women who tested positive for HPV DNA were between two and three times as likely as uninfected women to suffer a heart attack or stroke. The study does not show that the infection caused heart disease. It does suggest that the two conditions are linked.
This raises the possibility that the HPV vaccine (there are two) could help prevent heart disease and suggests that doctors should monitor patients with known HPV infections for indications of developing heart disease.
Scientists estimate that half of sexually active men and women have been infected with HPV and that 80 percent of women have had it by age 50. but, in most people, the body’s immune system successfully fights off the virus and it causes no health problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 70 percent of new HPV infections go away within one year, and 91 percent are gone within two years.
There are more than 100 strains of HPV. When certain strains stay active in the body for a long time, they can cause cancer, particularly cervical cancer.
To test whether HPV was associated with heart disease, researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston examined data from 2,450 women, ages 20 to 59, who took part in a national health survey from 2003 to 2006 (NHANES). Infection with HPV was determined by DNA testing of vaginal swabs. Heart disease was any self-reported heart attack or stroke.
Nearly half of the women (1,141) tested positive for HPV. Sixty women reported heart disease, 39 of whom also tested positive for HPV. When the researchers analyzed the data and adjusted for other heart risks like smoking, blood pressure, and weight, they found that women with HPV were 2.3 times as likely as those without the virus to have heart disease. The risk was even higher — 2.9 times that of uninfected women — in those who had HPV strains known to cause cancer.
Even if further research confirms the connection, most people who contract HPV would not be at special risk for heart disease. if the link is real, heart disease, like cancer, would be likely to develop only in people with lingering HPV infection.
Cancer-causing strains of HPV are known to inactivate a protein called p53 that helps prevent cells from turning cancerous. Inactivation of p53 may also cause inflammation and thickening in the walls of arteries. The study results raise the possibility that a drug that protects p53 from degradation could help prevent heart disease in people who are infected with HPV.
The study results are only preliminary. The association between HPV and heart disease does not even tell which condition came first. It’s possible that heart disease could have made the women more vulnerable to HPV. or some other unknown factor could have predisposed the women to both HPV and heart disease. It will take more rigorous studies to prove that infection with HPV actually raises the risk of contracting heart disease.
Men can get HPV infections, too. but there’s no reliable way of collecting a suitable genital sample for testing from men, so there’s no approved HPV test for them. That’s why most of the known information on HPV infections is from women.
An article detailing the study appears in the November 1, 2011 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. A video of the one of the authors discussing the study appears here.

Michele Bachmann Adds Fuel to Vaccine Doubts
Arguing against HPV vaccines as a intrusions on personal liberty, the congresswoman raised myths that have irked medical experts
Rep. Michele Bachmann’s denunciation of a cancer vaccine in the GOP presidential debate on Monday night reignited a debate that public-health experts wish would go away–the simmering doubt that a small but very vocal minority of Americans have about the safety of vaccines.
Bachmann (R-Minn.) has hit on a new argument for the vaccine doubters, who have over the years made flurry of accusations about vaccines–that they cause autism or auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and juvenile diabetes. as medical researchers patiently rebut each argument, a new one arises.
The latest: It’s a violation of personal liberty to require a vaccination, especially one that protects children from a slow-growing cancer. Bachmann has taken on the HPV vaccine that protects against human papillomavirus, which causes most cases of cervical cancer, as well as cancers of the mouth and throat, the anus, and penis. The virus is extremely contagious and to be effective, it must be given before a girl or boy has had sex for the first time. The federal government recommends three injections for preteen girls, and many school districts mandate it.
“I’m a mom. And I’m a mom of three children. And to have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat-out wrong,” Bachmann said during the debate in Tampa by the Republican candidates for president. “That should never be done. It’s a violation of a liberty interest.”
Bachmann also raises myths about the side effects of vaccines.
“There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. she said her daughter was given that vaccine. she told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result of that vaccine. there are very dangerous consequences,” she told Fox News after the debate.
It’s unlikely that a 12-year-old girl would suddenly come down with a developmental disability. it is possible that the mother misspoke and meant brain damage, but even that is highly unlikely, doctors agree.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has battled against one vaccine accusation after another. one was that measles vaccines directly cause autism by somehow leaking through the gut. Then there was the idea that whooping-cough vaccines can cause brain damage. when these fears were debunked, the vaccine-doubter community seized upon the idea that a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal was causing the brain damage.
that last one was harder to fight, and some of the most convincing material presented to news media and members of Congress involved video of brain cells dying when mercury was poured on them. Medical experts struggled to explain to a lay audience that the mercury-based compound used in the preservative affected the body differently, but eventually gave up and removed it from all childhood vaccines by 2001 to restore faith in vaccine safety.
The Institute of Medicine, an independent body that studies big health questions, appointed several panels of experts to examine the matter, and over 15 years, the panels have issued ever-stronger reports affirming the safety of vaccines. The latest came just last month. after looking at 1,000 different medical studies, the institute declared that vaccines rarely cause medical problems.
None of these reports seemed to mollify the conspiracy theorists, who simply change their arguments to support the idea that the government and the big pharmaceutical companies are colluding to make money and hurt children.
CDC had no comment on Bachmann’s remarks, and it’s no wonder it doesn’t want to touch this one–CDC officials have been vilified by some of the most hard-core vaccine doubters, who say that the public health agency is in the pockets of the drug makers. That’s also what Bachmann says about her rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
this one will be harder to fight. Medical journals cannot refute arguments that cash may have influenced a politician’s decision. Perry has received more than $28,000 from HPV vaccine maker Merck since 2000, National Journal has confirmed.
Robert Goldberg, vice president of the Center for Medicine in the interest and the author of Tabloid Medicine: How the Internet is Being Used to Hijack Medical Science, accuses Bachmann of spreading vaccine panic. “I don’t know what’s more demoralizing–that the fear-mongering comes at a time when vaccination rates are dropping because parents believe the same things the candidates espouse, or that the media is once again failing to do its job and let people know that all vaccines are highly safe and effective,” Goldberg says.
“The scientific data is very clear. this is a very safe and effective vaccine,” says pediatrician Joseph Bocchini at Louisiana State University, who is chairman of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices working group on HPV vaccine. yet the CDC says that only 49 percent of U.S. girls who should get the vaccine have received the first dose, and only 32 percent have received all three doses.
It’s hard enough to fight those who fear vaccines against clearly contagious and fatal diseases such as whooping cough. Fighting the personal-liberty arguments about a vaccine that fights a cancer that may not develop for decades will be even more difficult.

Women AND Men Beware: HPV, the Culprit Behind More Than Just Cervical Cancers? – Watching the Watchers
by Vincent RacanielloThursday, September 01, 2011 at 06:45 AM EDT
This article was written for extracredit by a student in my virology course.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitteddisease in the United States, and as of yet, there is no cure. however, thereis a vaccine to prevent infection by certain strains. recent research mayencourage not just the young women of the world, but also the men, to rush totheir doctors for this vaccine. As the advertisements for Gardasil have taughtmany of us, certain strains of HPV are responsible for the majority of cervicalcancer cases. Now research is uncovering HPV as a major factor in several oralcancers as well. while men may have thought there was no need to get vaccinatedagainst HPV before, this new information may change things.
Human papillomavirus infects epithelial cells of skin and mucous membranes.Through skin abrasions caused by injury or sexual contact, the virus gainsaccess to the basal layer of the epithelial tissue, which is the lowest layerof the skin. HPV is a DNA virus that replicates in the epithelium at theprimary site of infection. Noncancerous strains, which cause papillomas (warts)or even no apparent symptoms, replicate in the basal epithelial cells. Theviral genome does not integrate into the host genome of the cell it infects, but instead replicates autonomously in a dividing cell. The productivity ofviral replication depends on the stage of cell differentiation. As the infectedcell moves to the upper level of the epithelium and begins to differentiate, viral replication becomes more productive. Replication producing highconcentrations of viral genomes and the assembly of new virus particles(virions) is restricted to the outer epithelial cells, which are fullydifferentiated and no longer divide.
In cancers caused by viral infection, the virus must transform the infectedcell, changing its growth properties and allowing for progression to cancer. Intransformed cells, the viral genome has integrated into the host genome. Whenthe viral DNA is integrated into the cellular genome, the viral mRNA that isthen transcribed can contain cellular DNA sequences and is subsequently morestable than sequences transcribed from a nonintegrated viral genome. Becausethe mRNA transcripts are more stable, viral proteins, specifically proteins E6and E7, are present in higher concentrations than in cells where the viralgenome is not integrated. These viral proteins E6 and E7 interfere with thecell cycle by restricting the activity of the cellular tumor suppressorproteins p53 and Rb. Specifically, E6 blocks apoptosis (programmed cell death)by inducing degradation of p53. in an uninfected cell, proteins Rb and p53sense DNA damage and prevent the cell cycle from progressing further. ProteinE7 binds Rb proteins, allowing the cell replication cycle to progress so thevirus can replicate. Once a cell has been transformed, the cell replicationcycle goes unchecked and this can allow for the accumulation of mutations inthe cell’s DNA. this buildup of mutations and frequent cellular replication canlead to oncogenesis, the development of cancer. The specific strains that areassociated with these changes in epithelial tissue that can lead to cancer arestrains 16 and 18. These are the strains from which Gardasil protects anindividual, along with strains 6 and 11, which cause genital warts.
Researchers have studied oral cancers among men who are nonsmokers andnondrinkers, and discovered the presence of HPV in the biopsied tissues. Infact, some researchers are now claiming that the prevalence of HPV induced oralcancers is greater than cancers caused by both smoking and drinking combined.HPV is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact and sexual contact, and itsreplication is localized to the site of infection. Therefore, individuals whodo not engage in vaginal intercourse, but do engage in other forms of sexualcontact, such as oral sex, are still at risk for HPV infection. Virus is shedfrom the epithelial cells of the infected individual, even when the individualis asymptomatic. If an individual is orally infected with one of the high-riskstrains (either 16 or 18), the virus will replicate locally in the infectedtissue, and as described above, can cause cell transformation, leading tooncogenesis and tumor progression. Because of these risks, the importance ofthis vaccine for both men and women is becoming blatantly apparent.

If i just discovered small genital warts i know its a concern but can i get rid of them a.s.a.p?
Scared but want to do the RIGHT THing HeLP!
Genital warts are caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). there are a few ways to get rid of them. You can have them lasered off, frozen off, or use topical medication (creams). Aldara cream is very useful, but very powerful. You are only suppose to use it 3 days a week because you can get 2nd and 3rd degree burns from it. unfortunately the only way to get Aldara is by going to the doctor and getting a prescription. Hope this helps.
They can be frozen off, but they will come back. Don't have sexual contact with anyone else, you don't wanna spread it
The only way to get rid of genital warts is to burn them off or let them go away on their own. the downside is it is a virus. Viruses arent going anywhere, you will always have this virus. but its not the end of the world. Just like the herpes virus, it lives dormant in the lower part of your spine until triggered for an outbreak. Most outbreaks are triggererd by poor diet and stress or being sick.
The best thing to do is be cautious when you have an outbreak, dont touch them , ever. Dont spread this disease to anyone. Dont share towels or clothes when on an outbreak. and by all means take care of yourself. this will directly help to prevent outbreaks to begin with.
To spead this virus you need to be on an actual outbreak to pass it along. while your body will always have this virus, it should not interfer with life as long as you are not in an active outbreak.
GO TO THE DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! You should also get a pap smear to make sure that you don't have any on your cervix. 2 out of 4 sexually active women have them, it will never technically go away but you can control it.
STD cures? – Yahoo! Answers
I have a friend who has genital warts and he asked me today if there was any cure for them.. i told him i didnt know. Is there any cure for him? I feel bad for him. can it be cured with antibiotics or creams or something… and where do you get those?
No, genital warts cannot be cured. the best thing you can do is stay away from sex when having a breakout. Genital warts are a herpes virus, and there is no cure. sorry. go to the doc, they may have something to help keep the breakout under control a bit, unfortunatly you will always have this problem.
Tell your friend to visit this website amoils.com/genital-warts.html He will not reqret it, I know people who have had great results from using these oil, they are natural oils.
Genital warts are generally caused by HPV (human papillomavirus) and can not be cured. They can be treated with medicine and/or medical procedures if they do not go away. It is extremely important that he get it checked out by a medical doctor. 90% of genital warts are unlikely to have cancer causing potential, but there is that remaining 10% that are very dangerous and are a common cause of cervical cancer in women. It is extremely easy to transmit warts to a partner.
nope, there is not a cure for genital warts (although, I think if they are caused by HPV, there might be). However, there are medicines that can help make them better. I would tell him to talk to his doctor.
GO TO THE DR THERE IS NO CURE ONLY THING THEY CAN DO IS TO HELP CONTROL OUTBREAKS . AND IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 STILL GO TO THE DR BECAUSE YOU ARE NOW A CARRIER OF THE DISEASE
Yes there are cures. There are self applied treatments such as podophyllotoxin(Condyline,Wartec)which is not recommended for internal warts or for extensive warts that are more than 10 square centimeters. Then there's Imicuimod cream (aldara) which enhances the bodies immune response to the infection.some warts dissapear over time but then some grow in size aswell.if you cannot find the meds, get your friend to see a gynocologist for inhouse treatment.
Go see the doctor ASAP.
How are genital warts treated?
A clinician puts a cold liquid chemical on the warts to remove them.
You may need to come back more than once to finish the wart treatment.
You may need longer treatment if you have HIV. The warts may increase in size and number more quickly. Tell your clinician if you are HIV positive.
Will the warts come back?
Warts may return, even after treatment, this is because the virus stays in your skin once you are infected. You can pass the virus to your sex partners during vaginal or anal sex, even when you don't have warts you can see.
Are genital warts sexually transmitted?
If you have genital warts, will your partner contract it also?Ive been with my bf/babysfather for over a year and at my last app my midwife said the mole like things on me were genital warts and my bf was in the room also. I quickly told her they were not from him because id had them long before he and i met but he DOSENT have them at all so are they really warts because warts are sexually transmitted and he should have them also then. or is she telling me anything???
yes genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease(STD). they are a form of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is a very serious std. most women do not show any symptoms of HPV but if it goes untreated then it can cause many complications including: cancer, and infertility. you need to go to the doctor and get a pap smear done. This is one way it can be diagnosed in women.
in short yes ,
But they are not just sexually transmitted as Straight men can get Anal Warts but they arent having any bum love are they ????
HPV can be passed on from the hands to the genitals aswell simply shaking hands with someone who has HPV on their hands can pass the virus to your hands then touching yourself and boom its on your genital region
He can still have the virus.
Your baby can also suffer as a result, so you'll likely be having a C Section so your baby doesn't come in contact with them.
You should be using a condom from here on out so you don't give them to your boyfriend.
sure, it's an sexually transmitted disease
yes they are sexually transmitted.you could have passed them onto him too..
